Columbia Sailing Club is holding a Club Championship for 2023. The winner of the regatta will be designated the 2023 Club Champion of the Columbia Sailing Club. As such, the winner is eligible to represent the Columbia Sailing Club in the South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association (SAYRA) Club Championship.
Notice of Race
1 RULES
1.1 The regatta will be governed by the Rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing 2021-2024 (RRS).
1.2 Organizing Authority is Columbia Sailing Club.
2 ELIGIBILITY AND ENTRY
2.1 Entry is open to adult members of the Columbia Sailing Club.
2.2 The competition will be conducted in Columbia Sailing Club 420s to be assigned at random.
2.3 A total of ten (10) skippers may enter. The field will be made up of fleet nominations and at-large bids. Skippers will select their own crew, who must be members or family of members.
2.4 Fleet skippers will be nominated by the following racing fleets with each fleet determining its own nominating criteria.:
Sunfish
ILCA (Laser)
Melges 15
J/24
VX One
PHRF
Lightning
2.5 Fleet nominations shall be submitted by email to Rear Commodore Rich Horton (richhorton@gmail.com) by March 15, 2023.
2.6 At-large applicants can vie for the remaining team slots. Apply for at-large slots by April 2nd using the following link: https://forms.gle/jPRgKXvK7s8UWLyM9
2.7 Unused fleet slots will be given to additional at-large applicants.
2.8 If fewer than 10 teams are established through fleet nomination and at-large bids, junior sailors who are children of members will be allowed to apply. Those applications will be due by April 9th.
3 FEES
3.1 Registration fee: $25
3.2 Registration fee includes after sailing beverages on Saturday.
4 SCHEDULE

0800-1000 Check-in (reminder: no on-site registration)
1030 Competitor’s meeting
1130 First warning signal
Awards and after sailing beverages to follow racing.
5 SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
5.1 Sailing instructions will available by April 10th.
6 VENUE
6.1 The racing area will be on Lake Murray west of the dam and in front of Columbia Sailing
Club.
7 THE COURSES
7.1 The courses will be windward – leeward, as further described in the Sailing Instructions.
8 PENALTY SYSTEM
8.1 Appendix V1 will apply. PENALTY AT THE TIME OF AN INCIDENT: The first two sentences of rule 44.1 are changed to: ‘A boat may take a One-Turn Penalty when she may have broken one or more rules of Part 2 or rule 31 in an incident while racing. However, when she may have broken one or more rules of Part 2 while in the zone around a mark other than a starting mark, her penalty shall be a Two-Turns Penalty.’
9 SCORING
9.1 One (1) race is required to constitute a series.
9.2 The low point scoring system of appendix A will apply, as amended in 9.3 below
9.3 When six (6) or more races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of
her race scores excluding her worst race.
11 ON-WATER COMMUNICATIONS
11.1 Except in an emergency, a boat shall neither make radio transmissions while racing nor
receive radio communications not available to all boats. This restriction also applies to
mobile telephones.
11.2 Race committee will make announcements to competitors via VHF radio. It is recommended that each boat carry a VHF radio.
12 PRIZES
12.1 Prizes will be given to the top 3 finishers. The winner of the regatta will be designated the 2023 Club Champion of the Columbia Sailing Club. As such, the winner is eligible to represent the Columbia Sailing Club in the South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association (SAYRA) Club Championship, to be held at a date to be determined. If the winner is unable to sail in the SAYRA Club Championship, the second place winner will be selected to represent the Club. If the second place finisher is unable to sail in the SAYA Club Championship, the third place finisher will be selected to represent the Club. If none of the above is able to represent the Club in the SAYRA Club Championship, the Board of Stewards will select a representative based on resume.
13 RISK STATEMENT
13.1 Competitors participate in the event entirely at their own risk. See RRS 3, Decision to
Race. Competitors acknowledge that sailing involves potential risks. As a condition of
their participation in this regatta, competitors release all claims they may have against
Columbia Sailing Club and its officers, directors, members, committees, employees and
race officials for damage to property, personal injury or death sustained in conjunction
with or prior to, during or after the regatta. Competitors shall be responsible for damage
or injury caused by their breach of The Racing Rules of Sailing or applicable
governmental rules for the avoidance of collision.
14 MEDIA RIGHTS
14.1 By participating in this event, competitors automatically grant to the OA, including US
Sailing, and the event sponsors the right, in perpetuity, to make, use, and show, at their
discretion, any photography, audio and video recording, and other reproductions of them
made at the venue or on the water from the time of their arrival at the venue, until their
final departure, without compensation.
